At Premium Hardware, we’re blessed to work with some of the most talented interior designers and home architects in the Midwest. People would be amazed at how much raw talent there is right here in Columbus, from interior design and home decor to architects and building contractors. It’s a treasure trove of gorgeous work and we want to shine a spotlight on some of the most talented people in the industry.
In this edition of Designer Spotlight, we speak with Shauna Lehman of Shauna Lehman Interiors, who has been designing beautiful home interiors for over 25 years! Shauna does beautiful work with residential remodels and home makeovers around Columbus and has a reputation for paying close attention to every detail. We asked Shauna a few questions about her work process and she was very happy to give us a peek into her world.
How did you get started with interior design?
I did several internships in interior design when I was in college at Denison University. The most influential one was 6 months in NYC at Jeffery Rosen Interiors. I learned so much from them and best of all, I knew then that I wanted to be an Interior Designer. I graduated from Bexley High School, got my degree at Denison University, and then took classes at CCAD in interior design. I started my first job as an assistant designer at Findley Kohler Interiors in Columbus, Ohio. After that, I proceeded to work for 15 years as an art consultant at the Art Exchange in Columbus where I did corporate art consulting. The experience was unbelievable and, as I carried on, I began decorating houses on the side. Now here I am.
What kinds of projects do you typically work on?
I do all kinds of projects. Mostly residential design for homes in Bexley, Upper Arlington, and New Albany, though I will go anywhere! I especially love a home remodel project and love living rooms, family rooms, and kitchens!
How would you describe your approach to design, particularly for a kitchen or bathroom?
I always ask the clients what their end goal is and how they plan to use the space. For the kitchens and baths, I have an assistant who works alongside me to do drawings and help with selections. There is a lot of thought put into those rooms! It takes a team to pull together the tile, fixtures, counter surfaces, and colors and also to be on target to get the room complete. The uniqueness is there since there are SO many options to choose from, so having someone who does this frequently can help a homeowner make better decisions that fit their lifestyle. I also take into consideration the timelessness of the project so the client has something they will love for a very long time!
What are your design influences?
I love English kitchens, baths, and homes. And I love the magazines and blogs that are out there! I am influenced by media and travel and fabrics that I love.
How important are the details like knobs, drawer pulls, and other accents? And how do you go about selecting the right hardware?
Knobs and hardware are so very important! Linda and Bethany have a wonderful showroom with a wealth of choices! I can send my clients in or meet them there to help choose the right item for their project, it’s wonderful! It’s a great place for one to shop and browse and dream! I love the fact that Columbus has [a showroom like] this because seeing the item in person makes all the difference in the world when choosing these details for such important rooms.
